In Praise of Shadows

Studio of Sai has partnered with a 140-year-old handcrafted umbrella brand to launch the “In Praise of Shadows”. Inspired by the tree forms, wave moves, and the urban landscape, offer a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics. The design also emphasizes ergonomics while capturing the movements of light and shadow. Together with the Strap Pack, a convenient umbrella cover and shoulder bag, adds both practicality and style.

The brand was founded in Guangzhou in 1885 and moved to Hong Kong in 1941. It is known for its handcrafted umbrellas and lifetime maintenance of the umbrella Frame. Today, this century-old shop has kept pace with the times. In collaboration with designers Studio of SAI, Leung So Kee has launched the Shadow series of automatic long umbrellas and Strap-pack, continuing the legend of the brand.

In the 1880s, Leung Chi Wah (also named "So") engaged in the business of "buying and selling used items." He mainly dealt with second-hand goods and provided repair services, including foreign umbrellas. Oil-paper umbrellas were predominantly used in China which were not durable. Leung So believed that high-quality materials and craftsmanship could enhance the durability of foreign umbrellas. Therefore, in 1885, Leung So established the first store of Leung So Kee Umbrella Factory on Huiai West Road in Guangzhou. With the slogan and selling point of "genuine steel ribs and umbrella frames lifetime warranty," Leung So later opened the first branch store on Gao Di Street in Guangzhou in the 1920s.  In 1975, the fourth generation of the Leung So Kee took over the family business. In March 2023, the store relocated from Sham Shui Po to Tsim Sha Tsui - Park Lane Shopping Arcade.  During Covid period, we started to engage in social media and website to gain more social exposure. The handmade umbrella workshop is also our signature activity of our brand, promoting local brand and heritage of handmade in Hong Kong.
